Katherine Wiley
TEACHING BIOGRAPHY

Katherine has devoted much of her music career to teaching and mentoring in various capacities. She is currently an adjunct professor at UNC School of the Arts in the School of Music and Department of Liberal Arts, and Wake Forest University Department of Music. She also maintains a small private violin studio, is a guest workshop clinician, and Director of Blue Ridge Suzuki Camp.
Through her extensive training in the Suzuki method as well as her own conservatory and traditional music studies, Katherine has developed a unique and effective approach to teaching in one-on-one and group settings. She has earned a wide reputation for her success at developing student's artistry and expression, technical skills, and joy for making music.
Katherine's violin students have won numerous classical and traditional music competitions including the Galax Fiddlers Convention and the U.S. National Scottish Fiddling junior championship. They have performed as concerto soloists with the Winston-Salem Symphony and Youth Symphony many times, including with violinist Midori in the Bach Concerto for 2 violins. Her violin ensemble performed at the American String Teachers Association Alternative Styles Conference and her students have been selected to perform at the Suzuki Association of the Americas international conferences.
As a young teacher Katherine founded the Blue Ridge Suzuki Camp in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia, and has been the Director ever since. Students and families from all over the country attend this immersive experience of music, community, and nature--with most returning year after year. www.blueridgesuzukicamp.com
As a guest clinician, she has taught Suzuki and fiddle workshops at institutes, schools, universities, and camp settings. In 2014 she developed the curriculum and taught the pilot programs for the Winston-Salem Symphony P.L.A.Y. Music--a program modeled after El Sistema for students who otherwise might not have access to violin instruction.
Katherine attended Oberlin College/Conservatory in their joint program, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in violin performance and minor in religion. She attended Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as a graduate teaching assistant, and completed her Master of Music degree in violin performance and pedagogy at East Carolina University. She is a registered Suzuki teacher at all levels with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and a certified mindfulness instructor with the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults.
